(1922–69), American singer and actress; born Frances Gumm. Her most famous early film role was in The Wizard of Oz (1939), in which she played Dorothy and sang ‘Over the Rainbow’. Other notable films include Meet Me in St Louis (1944) and A Star is Born (1954).
