  • A territory of northern Canada extending northwards from the 60th parallel and westwards from Hudson Bay to the Rocky Mountains; population 41,464 (2006); capital, Yellowknife. From 1670 the southern part of this territory was part of Rupert's Land; the remainder was under nominal British rule until 1870, when both parts were ceded to Canada.

  • A territory of northern Canada, between Yukon Territory and Nunavut; capital: Yellowknife. Much of it consists of sparsely inhabited forests and tundra. The Northwest Territories, then including the land that is now Nunavut, was ceded by Britain to Canada in 1870. Nunavut became a separate territory in 1999.
