Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Henry George Liddell (1811–1898), lexicographer and dean of Christ Church, Oxford. From ancient Greek ψυχαγωγός (adjective) conjuring up the dead, (noun) necromancer, in Byzantine Greek also leader of departed souls, said of Hermes from ψυχή + ἀγωγός leading.
