Origin

Late 19th century; earliest use found in John Stainer (1840–1901), musicologist and composer. From the name of Joseph Picco (also known as Angelo Picchi) (b. 1830), ‘the Sardinian minstrel’, who performed on this instrument with great virtuosity and was heard in London in 1856 + pipe.
