Origin

Late 16th century; earliest use found in John King (d. 1621), bishop of London. From classical Latin germānitāt-, germānitās relationship between brothers and sisters, affinity from germānus + -tās. Compare Middle French germanité relationship between siblings and also germaineté, in the same sense.
