  • 2Any of several South and South-East Asian grasses of the genus Cymbopogon that yield fragrant essential oils; (in later use) specifically a form or variety of rosha grass, C. martini.

  • 3More fully "ginger-grass oil." An essential oil produced from any of several grasses of the genus Cymbopogon; (in later use) specifically the oil produced from one form of C. martini, which is considered to be inferior to the palmarosa oil produced from another form of the same species.

Mid 18th century; earliest use found in Griffith Hughes (1707–1750). From ginger + grass.
