From German Pilger, lit ‘pilgrim’, after Pilgerschrittwalzwerk, lit ‘pilgrim's steps rolling mill’, so called in allusion to the alternate feeding in and partial withdrawal of the billet during the operation of the mill, which is said to resemble the steps of pilgrims approaching a shrine
