Mid 16th century; earliest use found in Hugh Latimer (c1485–1555), bishop of Worcester, preacher, and protestant martyr. From post-classical Latin remissorius of remission or absolution, (of a letter) in reply from classical Latin remiss-, past participial stem of remittere + -orius.
