Late 18th century; earliest use found in William Marshall (bap. 1745, d. 1818), agricultural writer and land agent. From classical Latin punctulum slight prick or stab (2nd cent. a.d. in Apuleius), in post-classical Latin also small point or mark from punctum + -ulum.
