Late 16th century; earliest use found in George Puttenham (1529–?1591), writer and literary critic. Probably originally from post-classical Latin odorabilis perceptible by smell from classical Latin odōrārī to smell, scent (from odor) + -bilis; in later use apparently independently from odour + -able.
