  • 2Medicine (usually in plural) a ward round made by a superintending or senior physician or surgeon, in order to review the progress of the patients and to instruct junior staff; (in later use also) a lecture on a disease, treatment, or some other aspect of medical or surgical practice, delivered to hospital staff by an expert or specialist in the subject.

Mid 17th century; earliest use found in Henry Hexham (fl. 1601–1650), soldier and author.
