Former name of the town of Mafikeng in South Africa, capital of North West. In 1899–1900, during the Second Boer War, a small British force commanded by Lord Baden-Powell was besieged in Mafeking for 215 days; the town's eventual relief was greeted in Britain with widespread celebration.
