Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Arthur Stanley (1815–1881), dean of Westminster. From Byzantine Greek ὠμοϕόριον a kind of hood, a bishop's vestment from ancient Greek ὠμο- + -ϕορος + -ιον, diminutive suffix.
