Late 16th century; earliest use found in George Chapman (?1560–1634), poet and playwright. Probably partly from Middle French plaudir to applaud, partly from its etymon classical Latin plaudere to strike, clap the hands, to applaud, to express approval, of uncertain origin, and partly (especially in poetry) aphetic from applaud.
