Late 17th century; earliest use found in Jane Barker (bap. 1652, d.?1727), poet and novelist. Either irregularly from plaudit + -or, or irregularly from classical Latin plaudere plaud (plaudit- being erroneously taken as past participial stem) + -or; perhaps by association with auditor.
