Late 19th century; earliest use found in John Stainer (1840–1901), musicologist and composer. From French manche handle of a tool, neck of a violin (Cotgrave, 1611) from post-classical Latin manicus handle (in undated glosses; 1188 in a British source), ultimately from classical Latin manus hand, perhaps as a back-formation from manicula plough-handle.
