Origin

Mid 18th century; earliest use found in Thomas Carte (d. 1754), historian. So called with reference to an account in Constantius of Lyon's Vita Germani (ch. 18), according to which the Britons, newly baptized and led by Germanus of Auxerre, terrified their enemy into flight with cries of ‘alleluia’.
