  • The policy, pursued by Pétain, of collaborating with the German occupying forces in France between 1940 and 1944; (hence, more generally) collaborationism. In later use also: the ultra-conservative, nationalist ideology associated with the Vichy regime and its supporters.

Origin

1940s; earliest use found in The Oakland Tribune. From the name of Henri Philippe Pétain + -ism, probably after French pétainisme (although this is first attested slightly later: 1943).
