Late 15th century. Probably originally from Middle French plumas plumasse, and hence a doublet of plumasse; compare other French loans ending in -ash, and compare also verbs in -ish. In later use perhaps influenced by from French (now regional (south-eastern France, western Switzerland)) plumache a plume or bunch of feathers from Italian piumaccio from post-classical Latin plumacium.
