Late 17th century; earliest use found in Thomas Tenison (1636–1715), archbishop of Canterbury. From Hellenistic Greek Ὀϕιανοί (plural) serpent-worshippers (Clement of Alexandria), members of an early Gnostic sect which worshipped the serpent (Origen) from ancient Greek ὄϕις serpent + -ανος.
