Early 17th century; earliest use found in Henry Cockeram (fl. 1623–1658), lexicographer. From classical Latin Marōnēus, adjective (from Marōnēa (also Marōnīa) from ancient Greek Μαρώνεια, the name of a town in Thrace) + -an: see -ean, -ian.
