Mid 19th century; earliest use found in John Westwood (1805–1893), entomologist and palaeographer. From scientific Latin Tetrapoda from ancient Greek τετραποδ-, τετράπους four-footed (from τετρα- + ποδ-, ποῦς: see -pod) + scientific Latin -a.
