Mid 18th century; earliest use found in John Hill (bap. 1714, d. 1775), physician and actor. From scientific Latin Crinum, genus name (Linnaeus Species plantarum I. 291, after his earlier use in Hortus Cliffortianus 127), alteration of classical Latin crinon, variety of lily (Pliny) from ancient Greek κρίνον lily, a loanword of unknown origin.
