Chiefly North American. Any of various oaks of riverside or swampy habitats, as the pin oak (Quercus palustris) and the laurel oak (Q. laurifolia); specifically an oak of the south-eastern United States, Q. nigra, with hard, coarse-grained wood. Also (Australian): a river she-oak (genus Casuarina) (rare).
