‘Free love’ never meant libertinism…but quite simply that there should be no coercion in sexual relationships. There were ‘exclusivists’ and ‘varietists’.
The troubling prevalence of cheating, well-documented in study after study, is in fact primarily a problem with monogamy itself; there is much less room in the varietist worldview for convenient or callous dishonesty.
