Mid 17th century; earliest use found in Thomas Browne (1605–1682), physician and author. From post-classical Latin accension-, accensio action of kindling (Vetus Latina), sexual arousal, illumination of the mind, (in medical context) inflammation from classical Latin accens-, past participial stem of accendere + -iō.
