Designating a type of hypersensitivity reaction characterized by oedema, haemorrhage, and necrosis (classically seen as an ulcer of the skin), which occurs after the injection of antigen into a previously sensitized animal and is mediated by the formation of immune complexes. Now especially in "Arthus reaction".

Origin

Early 20th century; earliest use found in Journal of Experimental Medicine. From the name of Nicolas Maurice Arthus, French immunologist and physiologist, who described the reaction in 1903.
