(AD 204–22), Roman emperor 218–22; born Varius Avitus Bassianus. He took his name from the Syro-Phoenician sun god Elah-Gabal, of whom he was a hereditary priest. He became notorious for his dissipated lifestyle and neglect of state affairs; he and his mother were both murdered.
