(born 1963), US baseball player; full name Mark David McGwire. A first baseman, he played for the Oakland Athletics 1986–1997 and the St. Louis Cardinals 1997–2001. In 1998, he broke Roger Maris's record of 61 home runs in a season by hitting 70, an accomplishment later tainted by allegations of steroid use.
