  • In defensive play, a system of signals and discards by which a player indicates a desire for his or her partner to lead a particular suit. Usually attributive, frequently in "McKenney convention".

1930s. From the name of William E. McKenney, U.S. player of bridge, who popularized the system (devised by the American player Hy Lavinthal in 1934) in his daily newspaper column.
