Early 20th century; earliest use found in Mary Annette von Arnim (1866–1941), novelist. From German Quatsch from quatschen to talk nonsense, to babble, apparently specifically use of quatschen to hit mud or something moist and soft (e.g. of a foot stepping into mud), to emit the corresponding sound.
