(86–35 BC), Roman historian and politician; Latin name Gaius Sallustius Crispus. As a historian he was concerned with the political and moral decline of Rome after the fall of Carthage in 146 BC. His chief surviving works deal with the Catiline conspiracy and the Jugurthine War.
