(1509–64), French Protestant theologian and reformer. On becoming a Protestant he fled to Switzerland, where he attempted to reorder society on reformed Christian principles and established the first Presbyterian government, in Geneva. His Institutes of the Christian Religion (1536) was the first systematic account of reformed Christian doctrine.
