  • Christian Church. An ecclesiastical vestment resembling a maniple, worn suspended from the left side of a girdle; (also) the girdle and cloth together, considered as a single garment. Earlier also apparently: a girdle having two pendants or lappets (now historical). Also called subcinctorium, succinctorium, and praecinctorium. Compare also "subcingle".

Early 19th century (in an earlier sense). From classical Latin subcingulum (also succingulum) garment worn round the loins, in post-classical Latin specifically denoting an ecclesiastical garment from sub- + cingulum.
